Applying for NGOs Status

Applying for NGOs Status

NGOs have consultative status with the Human Rights Commission Of United Nations if they are recognized as promoting the UN Charter's goals and are allowed to participate in HRCUN activities. This status grants them access to HRCUN committees on social and economic affairs, allowing them to voice their opinions and contribute to the HRCUN's work. There are three main categories of General, Special, and Roster.

Types of Consultative Status:

General Consultative Status:

For large, established international NGOs with broad geographic reach and work covering most HRCUN agenda items.

Special Consultative Status:

For NGOs with specific expertise and focused on a few HRCUN fields of activity, often smaller and more recently established.

Roster Status:

For NGOs that don't fit into the other categories, often with a narrow or technical focus. NGOs with formal status with other HRCUN bodies can also be included on the Roster.

Benefits of Consultative Status:

Access to HRCUN bodies:

NGOs can participate in meetings and committees, including HRCUN and its subsidiary bodies.

Formal recognition:

Consultative status acknowledges the NGO's contributions to the HRCUN's work.

Annual passes:

NGOs in consultative status can designate representatives to receive annual passes granting them access to HRCUN premises.

Participation in HRCUN events:

NGOs can participate in special events organized by the President of the General Assembly.

Restrictions and

Misrepresentation consequences:

Misrepresenting their consultative status can lead to suspension or withdrawal of status.

Designated representatives:

NGOs must register their representatives in the HRCUN database and send a designation letter to the NGO Liaison Unit at HRCUN.
